Brutalist Chair

Play my narration of this post

When I first got my ShapeokoXXl desktop cnc machine, I wanted to break it in with a proper challenge. A useful and creative thing as my ‘Hello World’.

The goal was to make ‘a thing’ using only wood from the evergrowing scrap bin. I used what is possibly the cheapest, lowest cost plywood I could find. I also had a small pile of reclaimed redwood from my homey/fam/shopmate Aleksey. Perfect, make something pretty (subjectively), useful, upcycle materials, and spend no cash. I used wood glue and clamps, some wood screws, and of course, the ShapeokoXXL.

What is Brutalism? : “Both in architecture and in digital design, brutalism is seen as a reaction against artificiality and lightness. Proponents praise it for its honesty and daring. Antidesign, which is often also referred to as brutalism, but has different goals and is expressed differently” –link. “In its ruggedness and lack of concern to look comfortable or easy, Brutalism can be seen as a reaction by a younger generation to the lightness, optimism, and frivolity of today’s web design.” –link.

A good bit of music to go with the cold betón personality of brutalism. Russian darkwave Molchat Doma – Молчат Дома
